There has been evidence of people using some form of cosmetics from all the way back to the Ice Age. Since then the makeup trends have changed completely. The first Mascara was not invented until 1915 therefore the 1910’s style was very bare and contained minimal color on the face. Once the roaring 20’s came along women began to wear very heavy smokey eyes to contribute to women’s equality milestones during this time. Women had short bobs and dark eyes to represent their new freedom in America.
In the 1930’s things changed from very dramatic eyes to extremely thin eyebrows with simple mascara, which could be linked to the low economy in America during this time. During the 1940’s the trends changed completely, women began working because men were off fighting in the war therefore women had thicker eyebrows and simple eyes and bright lips. Overall, the 40’s were very simple and very focused on World War II and women coming into the economy.
During the 1950’s winged liner came into play. Thick eyebrows, long lashes, winged eyeliner and reddish pink lips. This look evolved during the 60’s with extra long voluminous lashes.
The 1970’s were all about the natural looks which is a big change from the 80’s where the more makeup the better. In the 80’s everyone got perms and very colorful eyeshadows and eyeliners.
More recently in the 1990’s and the 2000’s the look started being more full face and extreme lashes more like the makeup looks you would see in this day.
