Interview Blog

Yevonn, salon owner

As a person in the beauty industry how have you seen trends change?

When I first started people were still into the perm trends and everybody wanted big curly hair, but now things are completely different because now everybody wants sleek, natural, and healthy hair, without the damage of perms. Most clients tend to do everything possible with restorative and moisturizing treatments to keep their hair looking healthy and the thought of ever getting a perm seems crazy because of the very different trends now.

What do you think about the trends now vs. how they were when you first started in cosmetology?

I like the trends now a lot more than before, some of my clients have beautiful natural hair which, with the right cut and the right products, can fall nicely. Now there is more room for creativity because color is a very big trend right now, and most people tend to color their hair whether its natural highlights, full bleaching, or adding vibrant colors.

What made you focus on coloring, cutting, and natural styling?

These services are my main focuses because, like I said before that is what is in right now and as a cosmetologist you have to stay up to date with all of the newest trends, because that’s what your clients are always going to want.

What is your favorite service to preform?

Definitely cutting because there are so many different ways it can be done and it is different for everybody. Cutting hair also takes a lot of experience to cut precisely and not have someone constantly helping you, which is why most people assist for their first year as a cosmetologist.

What do you think about the rising educational aspect of Cosmetology?

I think the educational aspect of cosmetology is awesome, we do host classes here at the salon to keep al our stylists up to date on trends and  I also take every opportunity for students to start their careers as assistants in my salon.

What is your favorite era of beauty?

I really like the more modern era because of the freedom people have to do whatever they want with their hair whether its keeping it natural or doing a completely different color. There is such a wide variety of options people have to chose from which is one of my favorite things.

What do you think of social medias influence on cosmetology?

I think social media is a great influence on cosmetology in the way that it can put the stylists work out there and brings in more clientele, it is also great publicity  for the salon.

What is your least favorite service to preform?

My least favorite service to preform is definitely perming, I did try to do them in my earlier cosmetology days however I never enjoyed doing them, the chemicals are strong and can be dangerous, not to mention the very strong odor.

Cosmetic Enhancements

Years ago, makeup was used to enhance peoples natural facial features with simple foundation, blush, mascara , and a lip color. Previously, there were no other ways, other than basic makeup, to enhance a face but now in the modern day there are tons of small enhancements which are seen as a part of every day life.

Eyelash Extensions, which is when people get individual longer and darker lashes glued to their individual eyelashes. This gives the appearance of fuller, longer, and sometimes false lashes depending on how voluminous and dramatic the client requests them to be. Although eyelash extensions are a newer development in the cosmetic industry they can be seen everywhere.

Another new development in the cosmetic world is eyebrow tinting and tattooing. For those who have lighter eyebrows and like the appearance of darker eyebrows can go to a salon and get their eyebrows tinted to any color they prefer, this also goes for eyelashes too. Before, to get darker eyebrows one would need to fill them in daily, however this lasts for about two months. For those with thin to no eyebrows there is an option to get their eyebrows shaped and filled in with a tattooing needle. This is a permeant procedure, which is currently very expensive especially since it is a newer technique.

Ancient Egyptian Makeup

Centuries before any kind of cosmetic blogs or youtube videos,  ancient Egyptian civilians found ways enhance their appearances. Before blush was invented they used to pinch their cheeks to give themselves some color. The pharos and the high class civilians always colored their hair red with henna to represent their higher class in society, whereas the lower classes could not, simply because it did not match their class.

Egyptian queens used things like tree bark, henna, pigments from berries and flowers, and all natural things as makeup, which is always depicted in Ancient Egypt’s hieroglyphics. They also wore big head peaces and lots of gold and dramatic looks, which were of course restricted to the rich, never the poor.

Considering how people have been using some sorts of cosmetics to improve their appearance dating all the way back to the ice age the cosmetics industry has immensely improved however without this basis, things could be extremely different today.

Besame Cosmetics

Today, there is a makeup company which recreates the way makeup was originally made. The founder Gabriela Hernandez, wanted to “bring back the romance” with her antique looking products such as an old cake pan mascara. Her company is named “Besame Cosmetics” which mimics early 1900’s color schemes, packaging, roller perfumes, and even hair brushes.

Companies like Besame Cosmetics who are contributing different things rather than following the typical trends for this modern time period. By bringing back these historic vibes it keeps the memory of where makeup came from alive. They also incorporate original Disney princesses and characters which were the biggest trends in the early 1900’s. Going on this cosmetics website and visiting their stores transports you into a different time period in creative ways.

Beauty Standards Now

Today, society has many different standards of beauty which were not considered years ago. Now, some people practice natural looking makeup, just so it enhances their natural appearance. Models like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid usually have minimal makeup even on the runways, unlike the 1990’s where makeup was done so it looked like their faces were retouched with lots of concealer and glittered smoky eyes.

Artists have learned to balance makeup with the intranet outfits that are worn on a daily basis. Overall, the beauty industry has many more different options as to what people want to look like, some chose to wear full faces and some chose to go for a natural, but still glamorous look.

However, some things involving beauty will never change. While doing makeup the face is split into different sections which all need individual attention such as eyes, face, and lips. The goal is to have an end result that not only goes with the clients personality but all colors come blended together to enhance their own facial features.

Independent Reading Book

So far in my reading  book named Ugly Beauty Ruth Brandon, the narrator, is describing the setting and what it has to do with her relation to the beauty industry the book was written around the time World War II was happening. Brandon includes how gender and politics were involved in the upcoming beauty industry. She mentions the emerging trends and new products which were created recently, such as the first Maybelline mascaras in the early 1900’s.

Another big aspect of the book is it talks about some of the biggest trend setting magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan which assisted in promoting  new product lines such as Avon, Mary Kay, and others that are even still sold today.

The book is also beginning to talk about how powerful of an influence all these new beauty trends had on women especially since women had just recently gotten the same equal rights to express themselves as men. Ugly Beauty also describes the backlash old fashioned people had given everyone in the newer generations for following these new and unknown trends because they didn’t believe that women, young or old, should be able to express themselves in  these ways.

The book is outlining the era in time where people were transitioning to more modern styles and how people reacted towards it. However, peoples unpleased reactions only made the industry gain more popularity and eventually leads to the high status it holds today.

Independent Reading Book.

Going into this new unit the new independent reading book I have chosen to read is named “Ugly Beauty: Helena Rubinstein, L’oreal, and the Blemished History of Looking Good”

The book is about the cosmetic industry during the time of World War II. It is written by some of the founders of the modern cosmetic industry Ruth Brandon and Helena Rubinstein. It discusses how cosmetology has influenced this time and how it was such a new industry during a very dark and influencial time period. The book also talks about the newest cosmetic lines during this time and how specific genders took to them. This book connects to the blogs new theme of specific time periods which the cosmetic world has impacted.

Oatmeal and Coconut Mask:

Coconut oil moisturizes your skin and also contains properties which fight against acne. Once you add oatmeal to the coconut oil it soothes, hydrates, and helps balance the pH of your skin. Adding warm water also makes your pores open for the mask to do its magic.

Makeup Through the Years

There has been evidence of people using some form of cosmetics from all the way back to the Ice Age. Since then the makeup trends have changed completely. The first Mascara was not invented until 1915 therefore the 1910’s style was very bare and contained minimal color on the face. Once the roaring 20’s came along women began to wear very heavy smokey eyes to contribute to  women’s equality milestones  during this time. Women had short bobs and dark eyes to represent their new freedom in America.

The 1920s: Dark, Smoky Eyes

In the 1930’s things changed from very dramatic eyes to extremely thin eyebrows with simple mascara, which could be linked to the low economy in America during this time. During the 1940’s the trends changed completely, women began working because men were off fighting in the war therefore women had thicker eyebrows and simple eyes and bright lips. Overall, the 40’s were very simple and very focused on  World War II and women coming into the economy.

During the 1950’s winged liner came into play. Thick eyebrows, long lashes, winged eyeliner and reddish pink lips. This look evolved during the 60’s with extra long voluminous lashes.

The 1970’s were all about the natural looks which is a big change from the 80’s where the more makeup the better. In the 80’s everyone got perms and very colorful eyeshadows and eyeliners.

More recently in the 1990’s and the 2000’s the look started being more full face and extreme lashes more like the makeup looks you would see in this day.
